Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out prior to a reduction in the earth level within the nave of a church. It seemed likely that the arcade dividing the nave from the south aisle may have mirrored the old south wall of a church which had been demolished in the 19th century. It had been the original intention to excavate a trench along the suspected alignment of the old north wall, but this proved impossible due to the location of the pews; the trench was finally located at right angles to the line of the arcade. The excavation revealed probable wall foundations, a post-hole and an area of flint fragments and mortar, tentatively suggested to have represented the remains of the wall itself. Layers thought to have represented the 19th century demolition of the church or contemporary site levelling were noted. It was concluded that the post-hole may have been connected with the demolition, and that the wall foundations had probably been for the original south wall of the church. It was almost certain that the material which was to be removed from the nave area represented demolition layers, which were not of sufficient archaeological significance to necessitate further investigation.
