Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the area of the proposed Earth Centre development formed an addition to and an enlargement on previous surveys and the Cultural Heritage section of an Environmental Statement dated 1995. A total of twenty-two archaeological sites were identified within the study area, of which Denaby Main and Cadeby Main Collieries were the most significant. The former was sunk between 1863 and 1867 and closed in 1968, whilst the latter was open from 1893 to 1986. All colliery buildings and associated structures, with the exception of a very few minor features, had since been demolished, and both sites had been extensively reclaimed, restored and re-vegetated. Numerous other industries had developed as part of or as a consequence of the coal mining activity. Within the study area, these had included the Kilner's Providence glass works, and the Cadeby and Edlington brick works. The Don Navigation also ran through the valley. Given the numbers of archaeological sites in the vicinity, the development of the industrial landscape was likely to have disturbed numerous archaeological features, although few had been recorded at the time. Known sites included the findspots of prehistoric flints, including a Mesolithic core and microlith, and a Roman coin hoard. In the absence of additional information, it was assumed that most features associated with the majority of the sites identified within the study area had been destroyed. Of the features which had survived, only a railway tunnel portal and the Conisbrough viaduct were significant. However, a small area of land at the east end of the study area, adjacent to the former Edlington brick works, appeared not to have been affected by anything other than agricultural activity, and so may have had some archaeological potential.
