Abstract: |
Three sherds of residual 11th or 12th century chert-tempered pottery may have dated to the period of the earliest use of the castle site. However, the absence of any archaeological features indicated that the site remained undeveloped in the medieval and post-medieval periods. The main elements of the town were situated to the south. No evidence was found in the eastern part of the site of the castle defence ditch. However, if the level terrace on the northern side of the castle mound were projected, it would have extended into the eastern part of the site. It may be, therefore, that the central division of the site represents the original western edge of the 'bailey'.[Au(abr)] |
