Abstract: |
In advance of a pipeline, a desk-based assessment and walkover survey was carried out that revealed a total of 151 sites of archaeological interest in the area, of which 58 were recorded in the Lancashire SMR. Large areas of ridge and furrow, mill, house, churches and industrial sites, some related to limestone hushing, were all recorded in the area. 21 of these sites were to be avoided if possible, 35 were to be subjected to a topographic survey, seven required an evaluation, five a photographic survey and the entire pipeline was to be subjected to a watching brief.
