Abstract: |
An evaluation was held at St. James Residential Home in Farnham prior to development, and after an archaeological assessment had indicated that there was good archaeological potential for the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age. No evidence of human activity earlier than the late post-medieval period was discovered during the excavations. At this time and until the early 20th century, the site appears to have lain as agricultural land. In the early 20th century the south-eastern part of the site was quarried for gravel. Shortly before the 1939-45 war, the existing hospital buildings were constructed. The archaeological results of the evaluation work, while not entirely negative, identified the site as having a fairly low archaeological potential for all past periods of human activity. [Au] |
