Abstract: |
An archaeological feasibility study of various route options for a water pipeline was undertaken. Archaeological sites recorded in the area represented all periods from the Mesolithic to the 19th century and included an Iron Age hillfort, an 18th century bridge and a medieval earthwork which were Scheduled Ancient Monuments (County nos. 82, 68 and 69 respectively). The preferred route ran mainly along existing roads where archaeological remains would already have been destroyed to a great extent. However, part of the route did cross open ground. Three areas were recommended for archaeological monitoring during works, including one site where a medieval road was reputed to run across the edge of the study area. [AIP] |
