Abstract: |
The main results of the evaluation and recording were: (i) it confirmed that the entire site once formed the floodplain of the River Exe, and evidence was obtained that the sequence of alluvial silt observed over the site was accumulating from at least the medieval period and into the post-medieval period; (ii) a probable early river channel ran through the site but no date was established; (iii) two items of struck flint recovered indicated that there was some activity in the area during prehistoric times; (iv) there was no settlement or building on the site until the construction of the meter factory in c.1900; (v) a significant quantity of pottery, wasters and kiln furniture from the Hart & Moist (Devon Art Pottery) was recovered and provided new information on the range of fabrics, forms and styles that were produced at the important early-20th century Exeter pottery.
