Abstract: |
The evaluation established there were two broad phases of activity, medieval and post-medieval. The post-medieval archaeological deposits were characterised by walls, floors and episodes of demolition/destruction. Finds of pottery that referred to the 'Roe Buck' (a public house/hotel which was known to have stood in the vicinity), suggested the deposition of refuse associated with a post-medieval hostelry. The presence of a garderobe and the narrow space between the parallel walls within Mothercare (a coal lane?) further supported the notion that the evaluation had located the backs of post-medieval properties that fronted Market Street and/or Cornmarket Street. A large void encountered may have been a well or may have indicated the presence of a medieval cellar. The medieval deposits dated to the 13th and 14th centuries. [Au(adp)] |
