Abstract: |
The objectives of the evaluation were to investigate the remains of the former defences of the castle with the purpose of informing further conservation and management works. Excavation demonstrated that the archaeological remains of the Blockhouse Long Platform consisted of a construction cut and rammed earth surface behind the curtain wall, the granite flag stones of the ertswhile Battery having been removed for re-use elsewhere, probably in the late 18th or early 19th century. Excavation also revealed possible demolition rubble from the Tudor magazine/shot furnace, mid-19th century garden features and evidence of early 20th century pistol practice. [Au] |
