Abstract: |
Excavation of a silage clamp within Blacketon Rings hillfort caused a large section of inner rampart and occupation material to be exposed. Emergency recording revealed that the rampart sealed an extensive area of buried soil. The rampart, composed of dumps of clean shillet and lenses of soil, was probably quarried from an external ditch. There were also indications that the rampart may have been heightened or repaired at some time. Within the enclosure a high density of pits and postholes was revealed, which suggested that the site had been occupied over a considerable period. Some pits cut into the rear of the rampart may have represented traces of huts. Surprisingly the only artefacts recovered were a very small fragment of ?Iron Age pottery and a tiny piece of heavily corroded iron. This suggested that despite the number of features visible in the available sections, the major areas of occupation, indicated by such features as hearths and rubbish pits, may have been elsewhere within the enclosure. Several contexts, including the buried soil, were sampled for environmental data and for potential for radiocarbon dating. [Au] |
