Abstract: |
<summary>A watching brief was carried out on groundworks associated with the construction of a block of shops and flats. The site lies within the 8th to 9th century trading town of {italon}Hamwic{italoff}. A layer of demolition rubble overlay the whole site, below which were the remains of 19th century buildings. The remains of an Anderson shelter were recovered. Three Saxon pits were observed, and Saxon worked and unworked animal bone and fragments of two human skeletons were found. An undated linear feature, possibly a boundary or drainage ditch, was also revealed. {italon}AIP{italoff} {italon}SMR Primary Record Numbers:{italoff} SOU 519 (Southampton City Council, Heritage Management investigation identification no) |
