Abstract: |
A series of trenches were excavated to evaluate land proposed for housing development. Aerial photographs showed evidence of the presence of a double-ditched feature and a number of cross ditches, and an earlier geophysical survey had in part supported the existence of such features. In contrast to other sites in the area of superficial similarity (Edenthorpe and Armthorpe for example), the features revealed appeared to represent only a single, rather than multiple, phase of activity. The parallel ditches of a proable trackway or droveway were revealed. The paucity of finds made dating of the features revealed difficult. One ditch revealed two aretfacts: a sherd of pottery fired at low temperature and of probable prehistoric date, and a piece of bone knife handle. Fragments of pottery of 13th and 14th century date were identified above the earlier features and probably represented manuring scatters. [AIP] |
