Abstract: |
Advisory monitoring and recording of contractors' excavation was undertaken in an area on the south side of the Cot Stream in the parish of St.Just -in-Penwith which contained probably one of the densest concentrations of shafts and outcrop workings in Cornwall. Rather than shaft capping, which was seen as a destructive process upon associated, often delicate archaeology, a combination of shaft collars (a stone and earth hedge providing an encircling barrier around the shaft opening) and fences was used. Eleven shafts were observed during safety works and repairs. [Au(adp)] |
