Abstract:
Excavation of an area adjoining the southern end of Mennabroom farmhouse prior to extension revealed foundations of part of a cross passage house. The building was probably a longhouse in its earliest phase, with a cowhouse to the south. Most of the excavated walls contained re-used roofing slate (unusual in a medieval context) which suggested that there had been radical rebuilding. Floor levels were also lowered, removing traces of earlier features. No evidence was found for a drain from the cowhouse; this and the outflow may have been lost during rebuilding. Period I of the building was a thatched longhouse, probably of 13th century date, Phase II in the 15th century saw upgrading, including re-roofing of the longhouse with slate. Period III in the late 16th or 17th century saw demolition of the lower end of the house followed by reconstruction of the main walls, incorporating re-used slate, other major alterations were also carried out, including adding a first floor. Period IV in the 18th century saw the robbing out of the hearth in the lower end of the building and the decay, or more likely demolition of this part of the building. In the 19th century Period V saw an enclosed garden develop on the site, and paths and drains were added in Periods VI and VII in the 20th century. The excavation gained a better understanding of the overall development of the house. [AIP]
