Abstract: |
The vicinity of the study area was extremely rich in archaeological remains. The gravel terraces along the banks of the River Thames and Leach had been exploited for agriculture and settlement since prehistoric times. Traces of this activity survived in the form of ditches enclosure systems, trackways, and settlement sites, mostly recorded as crop-marks visible in aerial photography. One such complex of ditches and other activity survived immediately to the east of the study area and was protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. While no similar early features were visible in the study area itself, this was not to be taken as evidence of absence of archaeological deposits, as material was known to survive in similar areas close to the rivers, masked by land use types not conducive to cropmarks, such as pasture, and by alluvial deposits. In addition, the site and its proposed access road fell within an historic landscape associated with Langford House, which dated in part from the 17th century. [Au] |
