Abstract: |
Three archaeological trenches were dug on land to the west of Green Street, Northampton across the supposed line of the former town defences. Features possibly related to these were discovered, a clay bank or rampart, apparently of medieval or earlier date, which at one point was surmounted by a stone wall, 1.85m wide. The upper levels of a ditch or ditches lying to the west contained medieval pottery. Two seemingly contemporary ditches were cut at a later date and were probably filled no earlier than the 17th century, suggesting that they could date to the Civil War. [Au(adp)] |
