Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken on a former transport depot prior to redevelopment. The desk-based study of the application area recorded numerous archaeological discoveries in the surrounding area ranging in date from the prehistoric to post-medieval periods, suggesting that the land had high archaeological potential. It was inferred from the cartographic evidence, that within the land parcel itself, little had changed from the immediate post-medieval period up to the mid-19th century. The excavation of six trial trenches revealed a series of post-medieval levelling layers that had been used to raise the level of the yard area at the base of the slope. These deposits sealed three archaeological features cut into the subsoil: a probably medieval furrow, a pit and a linear feature, which could possibly have been the remains of a prehistoric ring-ditch.
