Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the corridor of a river was undertaken in advance of a flood alleviation scheme. Archaeological remains recorded in the area included Mesolithic flints and hearths, Bronze Age metalwork, cemeteries, stone monuments, Iron Age earthworks and Roman coin hoards. In the immediate vicinity of Walverdon Water, the sites of two mills with probable medieval origins were known. Other features included footbridges and weirs, whilst well-preserved cobbled and channelled stretches were noted as important examples of 19th century engineering. A survey and photographic record was recommended for these stretches. It was concluded that earthmoving operations in areas of archaeological potential should be monitored by a watching brief, and that further research on the mill sites would probably be necessary. An evaluation of undisturbed areas was recommended. [AIP] |
