Abstract:
A desk-based study and site visit were carried out in May 1996 to assess the archaeological potential of the proposed redevelopment of a part of Sherborne School. The site, the present Fives Court and adjacent areas within Devitt Court, lay within the former western boundary of the precincts of Sherborne Abbey. In post-medieval times the area was recorded as 'Abbey Mill', the post-Dissolution ownership of which was traced from surviving documents. The location of at least a later (post-medieval) mill lay beyond the immediate area of development, although the site of one other building in the 18th century mill complex was likely to be affected by the proposals. The proposals also had the potential to impact on deposits related to the former course of the mill stream, Combe Stream, now piped beneath yards and buildings. The deposits would be expected to include waterlogged remains of high palaeo-environmental potential. The majority of the proposed development was to take place within the footprint of buildings still in use, with much of the additional required land being asphalted and concreted areas. Prior to demolition there was deemed to be little scope for invasive investigation to establish the presence and survival of any archaeological deposits. [Au]
