Abstract: |
An evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed land reclamation scheme at a quarry. An alum works had operated at the site from c. 1680 to 1774. Topographic survey of the site recorded a suite of relatively small-scale features, which were found during trial trenching to be of modern date. Features relating to the alum works were more deeply buried. The evaluation exposed the remains of a probable alum-shale calcining kiln within the quarry, and revealed that much of the flat area between the quarry and the hillside tips was occupied by a very large feature or group of features infilled with laminated clay. The remains of a bridge were also exposed. The features were considered to be of national importance in an alum industry context, in view of their inferred late 17th-mid 18th century date.
