Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. The site area was located north of the Roman and medieval town defences. It was concluded that archaeological remains may have existed and there was potential for Roman remains in the form of later suburban occupation and a cemetery. During the Saxon period a mint was recorded as being in the vicinity of the site, although its exact location was unknown. There was also potential for remains from later periods, as the site was located adjacent to a river and would have made it a favourable location for industrial processes. [Au(adp)] |
