Abstract: |
The positioning of the trenches were constrained by access and service locations. No definite evidence for structures was encountered, though plough marks were recorded, apparently demonstrating the transition between Saxo-Norman agricultural land-use to the medieval planned urbanisation of the site. A full range of ceramic sherds from the 11th-20th centuries were recovered, and the possibility that the site might have been terraced, into the west to east slope, was inferred from the extremely variable depth at which natural subsoil or bedrock was encountered.
