Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed extension to the store. The assessment revealed that the site was surrounded by a number of high status Roman burials, which had been uncovered during 19th century development and as chance finds in the 1960s and '70s. The site was part of the arable fields associated with the nearby town of Leicester until the early 19th century, when the rapid expansion of the city led to the comprehensive development of the area. The urban properties and tenements that had subsequently characterised the site were swept away in an ambitious urban renewal project which began in 1930, but the assessment site itself had lain open since the late 1930s and was currently used as a car park.
