Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks for a ducting trench associated with the upgrading of electrical services to the site. The trenching provided an insight into the stratigraphy of the N, W and S parts of the Castle and revealed the structural remains of demolished 18th and 19th century buildings including 'the Military Foreman of Works Quartrs and Office', 'the Gunners Barracks' and 'the Engine House and Straw Shed'. Below the Parade Ground a possible construction cut for the Naploleonic era barracks was also identified. Four stone-lined drains, probably early 19th century or earlier in date, and a possible construction cut for the Field Train Shed were exposed on the eastern side of the Castle. A series of concrete platforms was revealed at Half Moon Battery. The watching brief confirmed the complexity of the underground servicing at the Castle which was recognised as an important but still to be fully understood part of the castle's historic fabric.
