Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring was carried out during topsoil stripping at the site of an extension to a sandpit. Several field drains, a trackway and a feature which may have represented a wheel-rut from a second track were recorded. The features confirmed the pattern suggested by evaluation trenches excavated in 1994. There appeared to have been three phases of drainage ditches, whilst the two additional trackways identified did not appear to have linked up with those found in 1994, supporting the earlier assessment of irregularly positioned, short-life tracks. Traces of plough activity were observed on the west side of the site, and a singe prehistoric scraper, possibly of Neolithic to Bronze Age date, was found. Post-medieval peg-tile, brick fragments, pottery, the head of a nail and a fragment of vessel glass were also found, but were not retained. It was concluded that the combined weight of evidence from archaeological investigation, air photographs and cartographic sources indicated that the site had not come into arable use until the late 19th century.
