Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a cinema identified that Roman and Saxon burials had been found in the surrounding area, and that Roman Stane Street had passed nearby. An Iron Age coin and a dene hole thought to have been of Romano-British date had been found to the south, whilst a probable 17th century structure, an 18th century bowl and an 18th century icehouse had also been recorded in the area. A possible barrow site had been noted at the Dead Hills, a field name which may have referred to a gallows which had formerly stood there. It was noted that the proposal site lay on the edge of an Area of High Archaeological Potential, defined on the basis of the historic core of the 17th century spa town. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during development work. [AIP] |
