Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that it lay within the area of a Scheduled Ancient Monument, as an extensive Bronze Age cemetery had been recorded immediately adjacent to Elm Park. However, no archaeological finds had been made within the proposal site itself. Elsewhere within Elm Park, recorded remains had included Early Iron Age pottery and loomweights, a group of Late Iron Age burials, a scatter of Roman pottery, a Roman ditch, an Early Bronze Age burial and a possible building of Late Iron Age/early Roman date. In the wider surrounding area, finds had included three Palaeolithic handaxes, a small number of Neolithic objects, evidence of extensive Roman activity and a small amount of Saxon material. It was noted that the proposal area was unlikely to have been deeply ploughed, and that in areas situated away from modern foundations, any archaeological deposits present were likely to have remained undisturbed.
