Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in connection with the proposed redevelopment of the site and the refurbishment of the standing buildings. Probable archaeological deposits and features surviving across the site consisted of Roman burials and evidence of agricultural activity. Furthermore, the site area was known to have been cultivated in the medieval period. The principle development of the area took place in the post-medieval period, and the site was fully built up from the 17th century onwards. The principal impacts of the proposed works were centred on the excavation of lift pits, trenches for new services and the insertion of new foundation piles. Any archaeological deposits and features currently surviving beneath the modern lower ground floor slab would have been disturbed. However at basement level archaeological survival was likely to have been limited to deep cut features such as wells. [Au(abr)] |
