Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was produced of the site to accompany a planning application for the redevelopment of the site. The report concluded that the site had the potential to reveal archaeological deposits from three periods: Roman - in the form of buildings and evidence of 'backyard' properties; medieval - evidence of urban activity, especially the early street frontage; post-medieval - continued street occupation and part of Clockworkers Hall. The report recommended that mitigation for the archaeological impact of the new development should consist of trial trenching or a watching brief by means of a condition attached to any planning appraisal of the development.
