Abstract: |
A watching brief was kept on groundworks for a housing development on the site of a former tannery. Much of the area was significantly disturbed during the groundworks, especially during the removal of the buried Tannery settling tanks which were found to contain chemicals. An interesting sequence of archaeological deposits was recorded including the remains of two, probably successive, masonry buildings of medieval date and a series of deposits pre-dating and post-dating these buildings. The site provided clear evidence of early structures along the Loop Street frontage. Medieval pottery recovered is of a major significance giving some idea of the wares traded through Sandwich during its growth. [Au(adp)] |
