Abstract: |
A major excavation was undertaken following proposals to re-route the A249 across the area. All archaeological deposits threatened by the road were removed, principally the areas south and east of the main masonry building. The complete plan of the main villa was exposed for the first time, while three phases of earlier timber structures were uncovered, including the four bays of a substantial aisled building. Lesser timber structures of possible fences or animal pens and 'open areas' were examined to assess their relationship with the villa. Prehistoric flint implements and two possible ditches were also found. A late post-medieval truncation horizon extended right across the excavated area. [AIP] |
