Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed route of a water pipeline identified that the route included part of the medieval open fields of Great and Little Oakley, which were wooded in the 17th century but had since been cleared, as well as some surviving historic woodland, both of which had high potential for the remains of woodland-based activities and well-preserved medieval sites. Five sites within a 500m-wide corridor centred on the pipeline had been recorded on the SMR. These comprised a Roman road which was crossed by the route, an Iron Age ditch, a Roman aisled building, a cropmark representing a ring ditch, and a Romano-British cremation burial. Infant burials and a circular hut had been recorded at the site of the aisled building. Examination of aerial photographs indicated that linear features which could cross the path of the pipeline lay to the east. Evidence of charcoal burning within former woodland in the vicinity had also been recorded. It was concluded that further areas of archaeological activity could have remained undetected along the pipeline route. [AIP]
