Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the excavation of a trench for a water main across the west side of Richmond Bridge. The bridge is both a Scheduled Ancient Monument and grade II* listed building. The monitoring revealed no structural evidence of the earlier medieval bridge, although possible associated road surfaces were recorded immediately to the north. Part of the northern arch structure of the existing late 18th century bridge was recorded, as were earlier gravel road surfaces across and to the north of the bridge, but these did not extend to the south.
