Abstract: |
The evaluation consisted of three boreholes and core samples. The assessment indicated that truncation of the earlier deposits by post-medieval activities was likely to be widespread across the site. Bedded waterlain sands, silt and clay with carbonate concretions probably represented an unstable fluvial environment, possibly dating to the early Holocene. Later sandy clay-silt, with intermittent rooting, implied an increasingly dry environment. Post-medieval activities on the site were likely to have related to the cutting of a series of channels, depicted on 18th and 19th century maps. Features and deposits suggested deliberate flooding of the site, relating to the cultivation of osiers (willow wands for basket-making) or to allow sediment to settle-out of the water supply. Subsequent flooding may have been related to the abandonment of the osier beds and the excavation of the canal basin to the north of the site, in the early 19th century. The report concluded the impact of the proposed redevelopment was likely to be minimal. [Au(abr)] |
