Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation of land proposed for residential development at Downend was undertaken by means of mechanical trial trenching. The pasture field lay adjacent to the south of a medieval castle earthworks (protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument) and the suspected site of a small medieval borough. Within all six excavated trenches, deposit sequences of almost exclusively natural formation were encountered, primarily estuarine silts deposited by the River Parrett and subsequent soil formation. Evidence of human activity was restricted to relatively modern agricultural drainage and boundary features. [Au(adp)] |
