Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during excavations associated with mainly internal alterations to a refectory at Easebourne Priory, a house of Augustinian Canonesses founded some time before 1238. The 'refectory', which had probably once been cellarage for the frater above, was of late 13th century date, but had been refurbished in recent times. During the watching brief, it was observed that the refectory floor had apparently been relaid in the late 19th or early 20th century, and that earlier floor levels had not survived. Outside the refectory, the foundations of a missing buttress were revealed. These were to be incorporated into a new paved area. [AIP] |
