Abstract:
Am assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of proposed development. Donington was located at the end of the Roman thoroughfare, Salter's Way and although settlement was known, it was comparatively sparse for this period, considering its position. Although the place-name Donington indicated a Saxon settlement, no sites of the period were known from the vicinity. By the medieval period Donington was a settled village with a church, two fairs and a market. The town was likely to have had a prosperous start, relying on the nearby local salt trade, until Bicker Haven, an inlet of the Walsh, silted up. Since the medieval period the town had gradually increased in size, with 18th, 19th and 20th century development occurring. Map evidence indicated that the site was maintained as open ground, forming the rear gardens or plots to buildings fronting Station Street. In this instance geophysical survey was not a viable method of assessing the presence of buried archaeological remains due to quantities of dumped material and disturbed ground. [Au(abr)]
