Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during a scheme of remedial action - underpinning- to arrest the subsidence at 24 Castle Hill. The property was a mid-terraced house, probably of 19th century date, which lay on the line of the rampart and curtain wall of the Castle, SAM no. 17096. The site was visited to observe the excavation of four pits. The pits exposed a rubble make-up consisting of crushed sandstone and mortar, which may have been a backfilled cellar or a layer of make-up used to raise the ground levels. [Au(abr)] |
