Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed gravel extraction site identified that no archaeological deposits had been recorded within the site, although the area had some potential for the survival of prehistoric remains. A pair of round barrows in the vicinity, since destroyed, had been marked on the OS map of 1870, and the alleged site of a battle between Danes and Saxons lay nearby. Other sites in the area included a Second World War advanced landing ground and an enclosure complex of later prehistoric or Romano-British date. The development site had been subjected to agriculture since at least the 17th century. It was noted that this activity was likely to have affected the survival of any archaeological remains.
