Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches for an extension. The site lay to the north of an area of early medieval settlement which may once had included a Saxon palace complex. The medieval church of St Peter lay to the north of the site. The house itself was brick-built and largely dated to the 18th and 19th centuries although one wing was 17th century and timber box-framed. A brick-built well was revealed behind the current property, below a modern manhole cover. A few sherds of 18th century black-glazed pottery were recovered from the topsoil, along with a number of fragments of post-medieval roof tile and brick. [Au(abr)] |
