Abstract:
A desk-based study of a proposed link road, which formed part of a scheme of redevelopment of the colliery areas of Grimethorpe and Houghton Main, identified that the known archaeology of the area stretched back to the early medieval period. However, much of the evidence had been obscured by 19th century industrial developments. Until the early 19th century the area remained largely rural - the depth of the Barnsley coal seam made extraction difficult before the introduction of mechanised methods. Enclosure of the land appeared to have taken place through the 17th and 18th centuries, although in Darfield (1810) and Brierley (1812) this had been a 'tidying up' operation. Most of the early field boundaries had been destroyed by agricultural and industrial intensification. The route of the proposed road scheme followed the line of the former Midland and Dearne Valley Railways. It was identified that the bulk of the road would have no archaeological impact, except at the southern end of the route where land had not been disturbed by earlier industrial activity. [Au(adp)]
