Abstract: |
An investigation of the seabed off Sandown was undertaken in connection with the construction of a long sea outfall. Two wrecks had been identified which lay in the vicinity of the outfall. Wreck A: (SZ 6294 8317) was located during a geophysical survey using side-scan sonar. The investigation showed that the feature was not a wreck but a natural, localised greensand reef. Wreck B (SZ 6335 8274) was identified as a wreck in 1989 in the course of a hyrdographic survey. Archaeological investigation showed that the feature was wreckage from a twin-radial engine aircraft, consisting of a centre wing section between points just out-board of each engine. Preliminary results indicated that the aircraft was a C-47 Dakota, which was currently thought to have been a casualty of the Second World War. [Au(adp)] |
