Abstract:
An evaluation comprising a resistivity survey and trial trenching was undertaken prior to the proposed restoration of a sundial, garden paths and flower beds within Chiswick House Grounds. One objective of the work was to identify the position of Moreton Hall, which had been demolished in c. 1812. The location of the axial path from the conservatory was confirmed, based on the evidence of its ribbon borders. The absence of metalling for the path and circular apron around the sundial base suggested that both had probably been paved, or possibly grassed. The ribbon borders suggested that the path had been lined with a small hedge or flower beds, either prior to the addition of an apron before 1862 or after it had been removed. The line of the loop path was established, other than to the east, where it had probably been replaced by the present path. No trace of a garden seat was found at the southern end of the axial path, although historical maps indicated the presence of a recess. An east-west cross path had been added later, and lay beneath modern tarmac, with only its southern edge exposed within one of the evaluation trenches. It was noted that the lack of resistivity anomalies which could be attributed to Moreton Hall had probably been due to the dryness of the soil and the varying amounts of compaction. [Au(adp)]
