Abstract:
The results of the investigation confirmed occupation of the site during 14th or 15th century. All the features dating from this period appeared to have represented rubbish pits; which would have been dug within the back gardens or open land to the rear of the properties. Such pits were characteristic of urban landuse within the medieval period. During the course of the investigation the discovery of a previously unknown post-medieval foundary site was also of considerable significance. Very few have been investigated in the West Country, and none had been located in Taunton. Mould and metal waste constituted a valuable resource, since the examination and analysis of which shed much light on the variety and forms of the vessels produced at the foundary, and the casting process itself.[Au(abr)]
