Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was conducted in advance of the proposed residential redevelopment of the site. A desk-based assessment found that the site lay in an area with relatively few recorded archaeological sites. Ephemeral traces of prehistoric activity were known, though no Roman evidence had been discovered. Historical records suggested that the village was relatively large and prosperous in the medieval period and a large mansion existed to the east of the church in the Tudor period. In the post-medieval period, considerable shrinkage and contraction was likely to have taken place. Five trial trenches were excavated and they revealed a number of cut and structural features, mostly of post-medieval date. [Au(abr)] |
