Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out across a substantial area, prior to the commencement of gravel extraction. Evaluation of other areas covered by the same extraction premission had led to the discovery of a number of prehistoric sites, containing features such as pits, ditches, a water hole and a number of cremation burials, which appeared to have been of Late Neolithic, Bronze Age and Iron Age origin. A Mid-Late Bronze Age roundhouse had also been excavated. During the Phase 9-15 evaluation, further features were revealed, although these were relatively few in number, being found within only 23 of the 133 trenches excavated. Features included cremation burials, ditches containing prehistoric pottery and struck flints, a shallow pit containing pottery of probable Late Neolithic or Bronze Age date and two tiny fragments of burnt bone, a possible gully containing burnt and struck flint, and a large pit or water hole. The upper half of the fill of the last-mentioned feature contained Bronze Age pottery and pieces of struck flint. Recommendations for site visits or monitoring during stripping were made for each of the Phases included in the evaluation, although no further work was deemed necessary for Phase 15. It was noted that further evaluation would be necessary within the Phase 10 area, as part of it had not been available for trial trenching during the investigation. [AIP]
