Abstract: |
In October 2006 a field evaluation was undertaken. The earliest deposit to be recorded was a Roman layer consisting of a yellowish brown sandy clay, the surface of this was later exposed at the base of the trench and although unexcavated, three sherds of 2nd century Roman greyware were retrieved from the upper part of the context. This layer sloped from north to south and was overlain by a similar although slightly darker deposit that filled the slope to form a level horizon with the underlying layer. This produced a Roman base sherd, a few fragments of animal bone, oyster shell and red sandstone. Sealing these Roman deposits was a thick darker layer of accumulated cultivation soil. [Au(abr)] |
