Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment was undertaken of the proposed site of an extension to a public house, which lay within an Area of High Archaeological Potential. A number of sites of archaeological interest had been recorded within 500m of the site, including prehistoric, Roman and medieval findspots, evidence of an 18th century pottery kiln, medieval and post-medieval features, a Roman road and 13th century burials. It was concluded that the proposal site had a relatively high archaeological potential, but it was noted that almost all of the archaeological evidence which may once have been present within the site would have been destroyed by earlier development. No further archaeological work in connection with the extension was recommended, although it was proposed that a 17th century chimney stack should be recorded prior to repair work, and that the restaurant area should be inspected by archaeologists in the event that proposed lowering of its floor level should be carried out.
