Abstract: |
An archaeological site investigation involving sample trenching and fabric survey was undertaken prior to consolidation and repair works to the Close Wall. The earliest information revealed by the project related to the construction of the original 14th century Close Wall, a 12 ft structure built in 1315 to protect the Dean and Chapter from danger whilst passing from their houses to their church. This initial phase of activity was then followed by the construction of an offset wall together with further amendments to the structure of the Close Wall. There followed subsequent dumps against the north face of the wall, possibly following a change in use from a purely defensive structure. Following this period it seemed that an attempt was made to return the wall to its former state in the 16th century. The final activity evident was the landscaping and general ground build up on the site involved in the establishment of the gardens for adjoining properties. [AIP] |
