Abstract: |
A watching brief was maintained during the construction of a new road layout and 'gateway' to Bristol's Broadmead shopping cetre. The site was located in an archaeologically sensitive area southeast of the church of St. James. The site lay immediately southwest of a large group of burials recovered in 1954. The site was known to lie within the cemetery of the parish of St. James. The watching brief revealed the remains of 5 articulated human skeletons, and a minimum of 5 others. These remains, bar one skeleton, did not contain any dating evidence. One skeleton was found with two associated copper-alloy buckles considered to have been 14th century in date. Radiocarbon dating undertaken on another skeleton provided a date of late 14th/early 15th century AD. [AIP] |
